History of SERV

1974

SERV Centers of New Jersey was founded in 1974 by families and clinicians who wanted to bring their loved ones out of psychiatric institutions. This was at the beginning of the community mental health movement, and SERV Centers was one of the first programs of its kind, and it quickly expanded within the state.

1994

SERV Centers of New Jersey formed the SERV Foundation to raise charitable funds to support SERV Centers' expanding programs.

1996

SERV Centers of New Jersey expanded its program model to include services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (SERV Achievement Centers). They also developed a service line specializing in the planning, developing, and managing housing for special needs populations (SERV Properties and Management). With the SERV Foundation, these separately incorporated not-for-profit service providers were organized under one entity called SERV Behavioral Health System, Inc.

2019

SERV Centers of New Jersey opened Partners in Wellness, a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) in Clifton, to provide integrated care for youth and adults with complex mental health, substance use, and physical health co-occurring needs. This was one of the first CCBHC programs in New Jersey.

That same year, SERV Achievement Centers, Inc., in collaboration with the New Jersey Division of Children and Families, developed a residential group home program for youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities and behavioral health needs. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, both programs expanded over the next three years.

2022

SERV Connect, Inc., the residential group home program for youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities and behavioral health needs, developed by SERV Achievement Centers and the New Jersey Division of Children and Families, became a separately incorporated not-for-profit organization and the newest member of the SERV Behavioral Health System family.

2024

SERV Behavioral Health System, Inc. commemorated its 50th Anniversary.

2025

SERV Behavioral Health System, Inc. opened a corporate destination campus in Hamilton, NJ.
